How do you break up tight clay soil?
Compost. Work in 1 to 3 inches of compost. Working in 1 inch helps in preparing lawns. Two to 3 inches is beneficial worked in 6 inches deep on flower and vegetable beds. Compost is widely available either in bulk or bagged if you do not produce enough of your own.
