Summary:
The expected cost of running at Chisum High just jumped in price.Chisum Independent School District trustees coughed up an additional $150,000 Monday to build a new running track and to cap the turf and install a sprinkler system on the school's football field.Previously estimated by Superintendent Diane Stegall to cost no more than $200,000, the low bid of $350,000 for the track came from Drake Construction Co. Hellas Construction Co. of Austin bid $480,000.Pond and Patio of Paris submitted the low bid to cap the football field and install a sprinkler system at a cost of $15,750.Trustees discussed the new track at length before giving unanimous approval to go with Drake Construction, contingent on the board's satisfaction on warranty and maintenance details.Trustee Cindy Morton questioned Drake Construction's past history in building running tracks, but said her concern was answered upon learning that Drake will sub-contract A-1 Track and Tennis, a division of Sports Surfaces, Inc., to surface the track.Gary Savage commented that students are in danger of injury trying to use the current track."The "D" area in the end zone will be a good place to work out when the weather is bad," Hasley said. One of the end zone areas will be asphalted to allow running lanes for long jump, high jump and pole vaulting.
