AthleticFieldTech.com News: Just Mowing gras does not "Cut-it"
They just think it's mowing," Livingston said, peering at grass research fields he cares for at Penn State University.Penn State's turf studies program is one of the oldest in the country, with about 240 students pursuing an undergraduate degree in turf sciences and a full-time faculty of six.Jobs in turfgrass management can be the envy of sports enthusiasts, taking them from the gorgeous greens of the PGA Tour to the hallowed fields of Major League Baseball. The golf course construction boom of the 1990s and, more recently, the explosive popularity of youth soccer have placed a premium on workers with expertise on how to build and maintain high-quality, high-traffic fields, said Kevin Morris, the turfgrass federation's executive director. For others, like graduate student Jim Brosnan, research interests bring them to the field even though they are not directly tied to the turfgrass program."We put all this effort and all this maintenance into the field, and we really don't know a lot about how guys get hurt and how not to get hurt," Brosnan said.Until this past December, Magro was the superintendent at a golf course in Wilmington, Del.Magro, 38, said he didn't get interested in the sport until after his first golf job a decade ago helping care for the grounds at a course outside Philadelphia.

Athletic Field Tech.com News: Sports Injuries are a great Concern!
The medical advisory committee recommendation that the Lincoln School District provide more training on how to stabilize and treat injured athletes is an intelligent and informed approach to reducing risk. The committee's recommendation came after a study prompted by a head injury sustained by Lincoln East High School football player Brady Beran during a varsity football game last year.Coaches, athletic directors and athletic trainers in high-risk activities at all team levels, fields, gyms and practices would be trained in how to assess injuries and how to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation. That means that in most instances an ambulance could be summoned to the scene by the time the athlete was ready for transport. The plan would provide broader and more complete assistance than simply stationing ambulances at varsity football games. In the 2002-03 school year, four high school basketball players died as an indirect result of their participation in the sport. The committee's recommendations already are being implemented, but the Lincoln School Board is continuing to discuss the possibility of stationing ambulances at football games.
